The Seven Rules of Translation

  1. Don’t rush!
  2. Section off the sentence or clause for translation.
  3. Find the verb in your sentence/clause and parse it (number? person? tense?).
  4. Find the noun in the nominative that governs the verb in your sentence/clause.
  5. See if there are any accusative nouns (direct objects) in the sentence/clause.
  6. Make a basic translation.
  7. Fit any other words in your sentence/clause (e.g. adverbs, locations) into your translation.
